At the request of Pope Urban IV, Tomás de Aquino organized the Catena Aurea in late 1262 and early 1263. Originally intended to compile the Church Fathers' comments on the Gospels, Aquinas decided to organize them in a continuous exposition, verse by verse, allowing for uninterrupted reading as if from a single author. The Catena is a work of considerable importance for both the originality of its exposition and the richness and quantity of patristic citations gathered. It consists of comments from 57 Greek and 22 Latin authors, some of whom were still unknown at the time.
In this first volume, Saint Thomas compiled the patristic texts related to the Gospel of Matthew.
