At the request of Pope Urban IV, St. Thomas Aquinas organized the Catena Aurea in late 1262 and early 1263. The original intention was simply to compile the comments of the Church Fathers on the Gospels, but Aquinas decided to organize them into a continuous exposition, verse by verse, allowing for uninterrupted reading as if they all came from a single author. The Catena is a work of considerable importance for both the originality of the exposition and the wealth and quantity of patristic quotations gathered. It consists of comments from 57 Greek authors and 22 Latin authors, some of whom were still unknown at the time. This fourth volume brings together the patristic texts related to the Gospel of St. John.
